Calling himself Carnage, he vows to track down Brock and Venom and also his long-lost love, Frances, AKA Shriek (Naomie Harris), whose scream is able to kill those unlucky enough to hear it.

This time around, his reporter Eddie Brock (who in one scene appears to also be designing the front page of his newspaper, which is impressive) inadvertently transfers his alien-infused blood to a serial killer, Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who escapes execution with the help of his newly acquired tentacles.

Hardy, to his credit, works hard for that big paycheck yet again, not required to show off quite as much manic physicality as before but committing himself to the stupidity of it all with full vigor. But while Serkis and the returning screenwriter Kelly Marcel have maintained the first film’s light zippiness (there’s none of that darker sequel nonsense here) and dated idea of cool (The Black Keys’ Howlin’ For You is an almost Xavier Dolan-level music choice in one scene), they’ve lost almost everything else, a pile of monster mush that should have been left in the lab. After it became a bigger hit than expected, gobbling up over $850m worldwide, a sequel was inevitably steered to the screen, with the original director, Ruben Fleischer, replaced by someone who knows all about duality: Andy Serkis. It was big and silly and anchored by an everything-thrown-at-the-wall performance from Tom Hardy as a journalist who has to live in the same body as a brain-eating alien, with space for thoughtful actors including Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and Melora Walters alongside. Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis has previously suggested that Venom may face off against escapees from the Ravencroft Institute in the near future, and only time will tell if the newly empowered Mulligan will serve as a friend or a foe.The first film was a surprisingly fun, if unsurprisingly disposable, throwback adventure that embraced its glaring Happy Meal tie-in goofiness and didn’t care for the overcomplicated world-building and portentous tone of more recent comic book fare.

After spending an entire movie hassling Eddie about his connection to the symbiotes and Cletus Kasady, it will be interesting to see Mulligan on the other side of the coin, grappling with his newfound powers and how to use them.

Whatever Detective Mulligan's powers end up being, it's clear that his presence will continue to be felt in the Venom franchise. Alternatively, Shriek may have passed powers onto him through physical contact. Early in the film, Shriek mentions that the cause of her sound-based powers is unknown, so it's plausible that Mulligan may have gotten powers without even knowing it at some point throughout the film. When Mulligan awakens, his eyes flash the same shade of blue as Shriek's left eye, suggesting that the character may have obtained powers similar to hers instead of a symbiote. However, a small detail in Mulligan's revival may indicate that the character will follow a different path than his comic book counterpart. After two movies of Venom facing off against villainous symbiotes, it will be intriguing to see his interactions with a more heroic member of his species, especially considering Mulligan's adversarial relationship with Eddie in the sequel.

Toxin is Marvel Comics' third best-known symbiote after Venom and Carnage, so his inclusion in a future Venom film seems inevitable. Unfortunately, Mulligan is eventually killed by the villain Blackheart and his symbiote seeks out several new hosts, including Eddie Brock.ĭetective Mulligan's sudden revival at the end of Let There Be Carnage seems to be a pretty clear hint that the character will be undergoing his comic book transformation in the near future. Mulligan and his symbiote come to an agreement, and Toxin becomes a vigilante, attempting to use his newfound power for good. He bonds with Carnage's offspring and christens himself Toxin, defeating both Venom and Carnage with the aid of Spider-Man. In the comics, Mulligan is a troubled police officer who encounters Carnage giving birth to a new symbiote (actually the 1000th symbiote of his lineage).
